What is the best chemistry book for a novice chemist?

I am a college graduate (BA) with little science background. I am interested in expanding my knowlege of chemistry, physics, astronomy – all of the exact sciences. I think chemistry is the best place to start a solid foundation. (If I am mistaken, I’m open to suggestions) What are some concise, yet readable books that I should choose?

To be honest, and I’m not insulting you in any way…But pick up “Chemistry for Dummies”…Or even “The Complete Idiots Guide to Chemistry”. I’m telling you, when I had trouble with chemistry, these books spelled everything out clearly. They’re rather inexpensive, as compared to some Chemistry text books you could buy online. The books helped me pass Chem 1 and 2 with straight A’s. Now I’m on Organic 1 and these books still prove to be a wealth of information. Hope this helps…
well, if you really have no background in chemistry at all you might want to look in the apologia chemistry by dr jay wile, it’s an advanced highschool ciriculum, it explains everything really well. the only issue you might have is that he writes from a christian worldview but if you’re ok with that it’s really easy to understand.
